Home Extension Tips

Many homeowners have contemplated an extension at one point. It could be that your home looks cramped or you need additional space for a garage, storage shed, extra bedroom or guest wing. Similar to other homeowners, you may have brushed off the idea since you presume it is a tedious task. On the contrary, a home extension is probably one of the best ways to improve the value of your home. Besides, it is a cost-effective and hassle-free option compared to moving to a larger house. Below are some insider secrets to help you with your home extension project.

Assess Regulations

Various regulations determine how you will create the building extension. For example, the building regulations could dictate the materials to use for your home extension, its size, design and orientation. Understanding these laws will help you decide the viability of the project and its design features.

Extension Design

Below are some tips to help you design the extension:

  • Determine the size of the extension. It should not be too large if you live on a small property.
  • The design should complement the original house. However, do not shy off from being creative. For example, you could use cladding and install larger windows.
  • The extension should blend with the interior of your home. Otherwise, the house will look disjointed. Consult with an interior designer to determine if you need to pull down some of the internal walls.
  • In some cases, you could make the extension multi-functional. For example, if it serves as a storage space, you could design it in such a way that it can be converted into a living area in the future.

Mind Your Neighbours

Believe it or not, your neighbours are an essential component of your home extension project. Remember, you will have ongoing construction works, which could be noisy at times. Meet with them and inform them about your proposed renovation and how you will ensure minimal disturbance. For example, you could halt construction work at night and during the weekend. Besides, you should barricade the area to prevent air pollution and control debris.

Go For Professional Construction

Some homeowners would prefer a DIY build. However, given the sensitivity of the project, you should go for a professional build. An experienced contractor will ensure that the work meets the local building standards. Typically, the contractor hires a certifier to inspect the works. The builder will also examine the project specifications vis-à-vis your budget. They will inform you upfront if you need additional funds. It prevents the project from stalling.

When building an extension, assess building regulations, consider the recommended design tips, mind your neighbours and hire an experienced contractor.
